Topics of interest

For Issue 04, we are especially interested in exploring the following concepts:
  • Stories which explore the impact of international current events on food systems or your food identity
  • Stories which explore the impact of the American political climate on food systems or your food identity
  • Stories about food identity or knowledge from the perspectives of elders
If you have a great idea that falls outside these topics, we’d still love to hear from you.

What we publish

Provecho publishes works by people of color.
  • Interviews, conversations, and journalism
  • Personal essays and photo essays
  • Creative writing
We intentionally avoid an institutional voice, preferring instead to encourage our contributors to write to an audience of one: themselves. We are honored to be many writers’ first publishing opportunity. You don’t have to be a chef or industry professional; the only thing uniting all of our past contributors is a desire to tell a human story through the lens of food.

Submitting
your pitch

Pitches should outline an idea for a creative written piece that explores the intersection of food and identity. For this issue, we are particularly interested in pieces that speak to current events or intergenerational stories. Imagine the piece of writing or journalism that you wish you could read, and create it yourself. We’ll support you in this process.

We will accept pitches for original ideas for written works in any genre that have not been previously published. This includes (non-exhaustively): essays, short stories, interviews, journalistic works, and poetry. There are no submission or reading fees.

Please limit your pitch to two double-spaced pages maximum in 12pt Times font. Pitches must be in English but, if selected, final works can be written in any language.

You may submit one complete work sample of any genre/topic in addition to your pitch, if available.

Please email your pitch and optional work sample with the subject line “Provecho Issue 4 Pitch” to provecho.magazine@gmail.com by 11:59pm on April 6, 2026.

Who we are

Provecho Magazine is a multilingual publication created in 2022 to celebrate the people who are underrepresented in our food media landscape; the people whose foods are beloved but whose communities don’t always feel that same love. Founded in Portland, Oregon with a global reach, we create space for people of color to tell the stories only they can tell about the foods that shape them, nourish them, anchor them.
